We spend nearly a third of our lives asleep. Think about that. There is almost nothing we do more than sleeping. If you live to seventy five, essentially you’ve spent twenty five whole years sleeping. That’s an insane amount of time laying calmly with your eyes closed.
But while we spend that time with our eyes closed, what do we see? When we sleep of course we start dreaming and see all kinds of things. But there are many other times we close our eyes. We blink, we think, we pray, we nap, we flinch and so much more. When you close your eyes, what do you see?
Here’s what I see when I close my eyes.
Everytime I close my eyes, I see infinite possibilities. There’s a million and one things that come to life in my mind when I close my eyes. These things may have been here all along, but honestly they usually come to fruition when I close my eyes. That’s the beauty of things like dreams and imagination.
I close my eyes and things go black. All light is blocked off but that doesn’t stop my mind. I instantly start to see my life as a single bachelor living in the city of Atlanta. Then I start to see my life as a reliable husband and father of two awesome kids. Then I see me being the father of a pair of twins.
The point is, I see so many different things in many different ways. I see one hundred and one million things and possibilities. It could be a math problem I need to rework. It could be my dream car being delivered to me. It could be me giving an amazing speech to millions. The possibilities are endless.
It’s a beautiful thing when you take the time to think about it. The way our eyes work is we see the things that are in front of us. The things we see are physical objects with weight and they take up space. This is our reality. We’re here seeing what can sometimes be a dull and uneventful life. We’re stuck seeing clutter, evil, and worst of all traffic.
That can suck sometimes. We’re limited to the confines and boundaries of the world around us. But the magic comes when we shut out the visuals of that world and close our eyes. I open up a whole new world where I can see, think, and experience limitless options. I’m no longer stuck being depressed because every street corner is filled with poverty.
That’s the power of my mind. That’s the power of our minds. Imagine someone confined to a nine by six foot cell. They may have to spend twenty three hours a day locked up. If I looked at that space I would feel forever confined. But for some, they close their eyes and see infinite possibilities. That’s me. I close my eyes and see an endless sea of visions, thoughts, experiences, constructs, ideas, futures, and so much more.
Let’s put it this way… I close my eyes and there’s nothing I can’t see.
