Everyone loves to make others proud. We’re often trying to make others proud of us for the things we do. Even as kids we look for the approval from mom and dad hoping they’ll be proud of our little artwork. Then we start trying to make our teachers and authority figures proud of our work. And sometimes we hope our friends are proud of us. It’s a great feeling making someone else proud.
But making others proud can be a dangerous motivation in life. When we focus our goals around our parents, teachers, or friends it can hurt us in the long run. We don’t want to spend years in medical school hoping to make our medical doctor proud just to realize we hate medicine. That would be tragic but it happens every day. The most important you should make proud is yourself. So what have you done in the last year that makes you proud?
Here’s what I’ve done in the last year that makes me proud and my thoughts on it.
Last year was a tough year for me. I was very stressed all year long. I was ill and hospitalized almost half of the entire year. It was a scary feeling being in and out of hospitals all around the country. And I worried about my health and future. I was also dealing with personal issues. My mental space was not where I wanted it to be. And business was declining pretty much all year long from the lack of attention.
But that doesn’t mean the whole year went to the dumps. There were still some great things that happened that year. And to overlook those things would be nothing more than ungrateful. My business partner and I hit over four hundred paying customers for our product. That was a great accomplishment. I turned twenty three and went on my first cruise through the Carribean islands. And I went to Disney World for the first time in years.
It was great when I look at the positives. But none of those things were something I was truly proud of. The thing that really made me proud from last year was one specific event. I was very proud of myself for throwing an amazing retreat for all my close friends and family. It was a one of kind experience for so many reasons. I had never done anything like that before. And Dwayne had never done anything like that before. But we made it happen somehow.
That’s amazing to me. We set out on a goal almost three years ago to treat all of our friends and family to an amazing retreat. And it was completely out of our reach at the moment. The money we were making back then was a drop in the bucket. And we were more than ambitious to believe that we could even create a fraction of an event like that. But that never stopped us from dreaming big and looking up all kinds of lavish vacation mansions.
Then three years later we aren’t in the best position. Again, we were struggling with our business in certain areas. And I was laying on my deathbed all year long. But we talked about the vision we had back then and decided it was time to bring it to life. So we planned and executed an unforgettable all expenses paid retreat for all our friends and family in Orlando. It was epic. And I’m glad that we decided to execute it then and there.
Life is not guaranteed. Anything can happen at any moment and tomorrow is never promised. And rather than push the retreat and celebration back another year, we took action on it then. And I’m proud of myself for bringing a grand vision like that to reality with little to no resources. And I’m glad I had the awareness to celebrate friends and family now not later. I will always be grateful for my close friends and family. And now I know they all know it. What are you proud of from last year?
